A short train ride away from London we visited the beautiful towns of Windsor and Eton. After a delicious pub meal on one side of the river in Eton we ventured up the hill to Windsor Castle.
The Queen's official residence, Windsor Castle was an excellent sidestep into all things regal and royal. We trawled through the treasures in the state apartments and saw Queen Mary's dolls house and the hugely impressive St George's banquet hall. We didn't get to see the Queen but apparently she does stay at weekends when she isn't chilling at Buckingham Palace so could well have been out the back somewhere.
Windsor was abuzz with festive folk picking up last minute gifts, carol singers and coffee drinkers and we had a little tour of the shops and a walk riverside before heading back into town.

We dropped by Windsor Castle to visit the Queen and she wasn't even home.
Nic took me to Windsor as part of my birthday celebrations. It's a really lovely place - very English, and much, much quieter than London, yet only a half-hour train journey away.
We had a great lunch across the river from Windsor, in a small pub in Eton. I had the steak and ale pie, which was delicious. English cuisine is hardly flashy, but it is good, especially in a traditional English pub. It is weird that they serve everything with peas though.
Windsor Castle was fascinating. For something like 1,000 years the castle's history has been inextricably linked with that of the British Monarchy. It was awe-inspiring to tread the halls of such a historic place, with portraits of former kings and queens and their families on every wall. We found Sir Edmund Hillary's name on the wall of the great banquet hall which was pretty special.
The other night Nicola took me to see Scottish comedian Frankie Boyle at the Hammersmith Apollo. I'm a big fan of Frankie's stuff on the BBC show Mock the Week, and his stand-up show was hilarious. The Apollo is a really famous venue, so it was great to catch a show there.
