For lazy, chilled out beach
days in warm, crystal clear seas then Serendipity beach in Sihanoukville
is for you. Taking a week here to chill out and relax, rather than
visiting a new city every 3-4 days, we settled into an easy rhythm. The
days would start with a morning swim before breakfast or brunch,
followed by further swims, sun chair lounging, reading, listening to
music or podcasts and more food and drink. Beer was only 50cents US
(all the money in
Cambodia is in USD), spirits
about a dollar and a BBQ on the beach with freshly caught seafood, beef
or chicken, salad, fries and garlic bread only $3.
At the weekend, more
locals stopped by, with local bars interspersed between the tourist ones
that lined the beach and there were the odd jet skis and banana boats
causing a ruckus. Whilst lounging in your lounger you would be visited
by a multitude of locals girls, men and children offering a number or
wares including but not limited to massage, manicures, pedicures, fruit,
lobster?, shrimp, sunglasses and jewellery. I managed to get a
pedicure and polish by a tad over zealous with the nail file Cambodian
lady for only $2.
During our week or so in
the city we checked out a couple of the other beaches on mini day trips
and bargained down a 3 island snorkeling tour from $15 to $10 that
included breakfast, lunch and some drinks. After successfully applying
for our 60 day Thai visa, we are off to Angkor Wat and Siem Reap, our
last stop on our mini tour before planning to settle down in Thailand
somewhere.
