The country that gave the world such lovely people as Adolf Hitler and Josef Fritzl, gave us our favourite Christmas market experience – when we did eventually find the markets, that is.
Sometimes we really should take the time to do a bit more research. Austria, I fear, caught us well and truly unprepared. When we got off the train in Austria – which was a very train ride away from Bratislava – we were immediately lost.
After walking around confused for about an hour we went into a hotel and asked for directions. They gave us a map, and maybe another hour later we found ourselves in the city centre. Our next problem: where the heck are the Christmas markets?!
One argument and two hours later, we finally found the Christmas markets. I can’t do justice to the jubilation we felt when we walked around a corner and bam, there they were. We celebrated with bratwursts, mulled wine and a potato rosti (like a potato fritter, except BIGGER and crustier).
The Christmas markets were probably the most picturesque of the three, and it probably had the best variety. Nicola bought a Christmas mug, and I bought a small marshmallow ice cream. Before we left for Bratislava once more, we enjoyed some wiener schnitzel for dinner.
So, we did three countries in three or four days. It was a good way to knock-off places like Budapest and Bratislava that we wouldn’t otherwise go out of our way to visit, and we got a wee taste of Austria – a country that I’d like to see more of in the future.
