After almost two months in
Thailand it was exciting to be in a new country again, wondering what
the food will be like, the prices, the accommodation options and of
course, what new or exciting drinks will be available at the 7-Eleven!
Our first foray in Malaysia was in the funky island of Penang,
just a couple of hours south of the border. The travel day from
Thailand was horrendous and we arrived too late to do anything but grab a
quick bite and fall asleep in our windowless box with three single
beds.
The next morning I was
up and about early, or not as early has I thought having lost an hour in
the time zone change, looking for a new room. Having traipsed over the
whole town almost, and feeling reasonably dejected, we finally settled
on one, a room with shared bathrooms, cold water of course, a fan,
friendly staff and Wi-Fi in the lobby, for around £7.
Although there isn't a lot to see in Penang,
save for a nice blue building, we wondered around Little India and the
coast and took a bus to their notoriously average seaside town.
The good thing about Penang was that it was the beginning of a country long obsession with Indian food and all things satay.
After beginning to miss
the beaches of Thailand, and having written off the pretty Perhentian
Islands at the thought of another day-long horrendous bus ride, we were
soon on our way to Langkawi by ferry.
