Athens is oh my goodness so hot. We actually experienced 38C! On consecutive days! And it was still 33C at 10pm. It was disgusting. Relieved to get to the hostel after taking two flights from Naples to Athens via Milan and missioning it to the city on a crazy train that screwed us up. Hostel a bit ave so we roughed it for a night and quickly found a new one online.
First stop, the Accropolis and after a long hot walk finally caught site of it! Boarded the happy train for a wee tour around the city (and it saved us walking up the hill to the base of the Accropolis) which was very fun. The Accropolis was pretty amazing and had a great view of the massive city. Also did train tour at night when the sites were all lit up - beautiful. Town was so abuzz with people at night which was fun to walk around - great atmosphere with everyone out walking, shopping, eating, drinking etc
Finally found a gyro (souvlaki!) ((after walking around everywhere looking for them)) (((I thought they were supposed to be everywhere))) for lunch and it was amazing and it even had chips in it! Delicious and at only 2 euros, bargain lunch. Found some good shops and an awesome flea market that had some great stuff. If only we didn't have to carry everything we buy with us and if only we had earned euros before coming on this trip....
More gyros for tea - what on earth did we do before gyros? Broke another damn jandal but lucky it was night time to wobble home with one shoe on. Couldnt have imagined doing it in the scorching sun. Also went to see Mamma Mia the movie which was shot in Greece on our last night before heading off to the islands which was very fun. Simon loved to sing along to the Abba songs!
**I think I should preface my post with the following statement: I absolutely hate Abba.
Our Big Fat Greek Holiday is now officially underway.
While Athens is an absolutely amazing city with so much to see and do, the stifling heat is almost unbearable. Almost every 100m we need to stop for another drink. We're glad our accommodation has air conditioning, because it doesn't get much cooler at night either.
The city is an eclectic mix of flashy shops in the center, really rough areas on the outskirts of town, and ancient ruins throughout. It's certainly no beauty like some of the other cities we've visited but it has a lot of character.
We definitely love Greek cuisine and the locals are pretty friendly (until you don't leave them a tip). We've enjoyed our time here but we're definitely looking forward to swimming in the islands.
