It was a mission leaving Rome as the whole metro line was out of action!! We finally caught a bus to the station and managed to get to Naples ok thereafter. Lucky we hadnt pre-purchased our tickets!
Our couple of days in Naples were a bit of a shock as it is very different to the rest of the country. Good hostel again with nice common area although in a fairly scum area. It was like Thailand again - mini shops and street vendors everywhere, chaotic traffic, a thousand scooters, dirt etc.
The whole town is absolutely hectic with scooters zooming everywhere and crazy filthy with huge rubbish piles all along the streets. We were even warned about rubbish rats (and then stopped looking too hard into the rubbish piles)!
Next day we made our way to Pompeii which was pretty interesting. Plaster bodies pretty chilling. Later in town we found a nice bit of the city away from the wharf and the rubbish where people were swimming straight off the rocks. We also had the best pizza of our life on our last night so it was well worth the trip. Next stop, Athens.
Rough, gritty, and chaotic, Naples is the antithesis of Milan, Venice, and Florence.
Much of Naples reminded us of Bangkok - crossing the street is like gambling with your life, the streets are filled with people on scooters, and parts of the city are just absolutely filthy, with litter and piles of rubbish strewn about.
Having said that, the main shopping street was pretty cool, part of the waterfront was really quite nice, and we did have some of the best pizza we have ever had.
Pompeii was an amazing journey into the past, and a some-what creepy glimpse of how life was like back then. The casts made of some of Pompeii's unfortunate former residents were seriously spooky.
