The caldera views from the main town Fira are stunning! We took the cable car down to the old port and rode donkeys all the way up the 589 stairs to the top! They were pretty scary but it was an exhilerating and gorgeous ride.
I must admit we lived it up a bit in Santorini and spent a wee fortune on drinks at a fricken nice restaurant terrace with the most amazing views.
We also hired an ATV for a day and took it all around the island which was so fun. We ATV'd to Oia and another open air cinema (this time Indiana Jones - not as good or as greek as Mamma Mia but still with a great atmosphere).
Santorini is our most extreme adventure yet - there was quad biking, donkey rides, sunset cruising, Indiana Jones, a volcano, and much, much more.
Quad biking around the island was one of my all-time favouritie things we've done. I cannot express to you the absolutely magestic views, as we rode up some pretty high mountain peaks around the island.
Cruising at sunset was very romantic, with free wine and heaps of traditional Greek snacks. The donkey ride up the cliff side of the old Santorini port was precarious at times but a lot of fun, and seeing Indiana Jones in a beachchair at the open-air cinema has to be one of the best cinematic experiences of my life (I really liked the film, but it wasn't as good as the earlier ones).
We kind of splurged in Santorini but we definitely don't regret it. If there was a fountain in Santorini like the one in Rome where you throw a coin in to ensure a return trip, we would have thrown in a lot of coins.
