Beaucoup des petits pains aux chocolats pour la petite dejeuner. We love the french boulangeries and patisseries on every street corner! Trained south to Marseille which was only about 3 hours and found our hostel which was pretty far out of the city - but easy accessible enough after catching the metro and a bus. Stayed in our first dorm room with loft style beds with 4 others which wasn't too bad but prefer to have a room to ourselves for sure!
Ventured into to the city and stumbled across the vieux port which was beautiful with lots of yachts docked etc. Climbed aboard un petit train which took us up to the Notre Dame castle thing (everything here like monuments, castles, metro stations etc have the same or similar names to those in Paris) which had an awesome view of the town and the sea. Also went on a cruise to the If Castle (made famous by the Count of Monte Cristo) which was fantastic - the weather and the views all around glorious. Managed to cook our first real dinner in our little room - chicken cordon bleu, salad and a baguette bien sur!
Next day missioned it (and I mean absolutely missioned it) to a 'very very beautiful beach' as directed our hostel owner. Take at least two bottles of water each he said and wear good climbing shoes. We listened to most of that advice except set off in jandals. It took about an hour to hike up and down this hillside but the 'beach' (pebbly cove) at the bottom was worth it for a swim. And it was beautiful. It was just a bit far to get to and really hot and the water was a bit too refreshing in parts.
We have loved the stop in Marseille as the port is gorgeous and our time here has been a bit more relaxed than Paris. Demain, Nice.
Have you ever taken hiking boots to the beach? We didn't but we should have.
I think Nic has summed it up pretty well. It wasn't really a beach - more of a rocky cove out the middle of nowhere.
Marseille is amazing! So different from Paris though, we can actually afford the odd treat (I have half a dozen Heineken in the fridge). Our hostel is great and we've got a little kitchen so we have been cooking dinner every night.
It was definitely pretty cool to visit the Chateau d'If made famous by the Count of Monte Cristo. I love that movie version with Guy Pearce in it as the bad guy.
We're training it to Nice tomorrow.
